How to save money with the best airport parking deals as the holidays resume
Airport parking prices have been indexed in many cases and are even falling, with many remaining closed as a result of the pandemic.
The cost of leaving a vehicle in a safe and secure place for a seven- or 14-night break can rival that of the vacation itself.
There have also been widespread stories of unscrupulous operators leaving vehicles in fields or even residential streets while their owners soak up the sun.
Non-air revenue has never been more important for airports, and car parking, whether on open lots or in multi-story parks, has become a growing part of this package.
Some airports are reported to derive as much as 25 percent of revenue from paid and valet parking.
Parking continues to provide essential income for airports, with many passengers choosing to travel to the airport by car rather than using any form of public transport.
Top tips for airport parking:
Reserve in advance
Reserving a seat before the trip can save pounds. But make sure you book well in advance.
Depending on the airport, you must book at least 24 or 48 hours before arrival or you will end up paying the drive-up fare.
Try a hotel deal
Combining an airport hotel stay with parking for periods of eight or 15 days is generally cheaper than booking each component separately.
Park and fly packages are also available through Holiday Extras (holidayextras.com), BCP (parkbcp.co.uk) and Superbreak (superbreak.com). However, there may be additional charges for hotel transfer. Check the regularity of the transfer and the time it takes to get to the airport terminal.
Short stay or long stay?
The best time to find out about an offer to leave the vehicle in short-term or valet parking is two or three weeks before departure. It won’t be cheaper than a long stay, but for a little extra, you’ll be a short walk from the terminal. Long walks loaded with luggage are not the best way to start and end a break.

Be careful if you book parking or valet parking that is not located in an official airport parking lot. A ‘Park Mark’ award system (parkmark.co.uk) is a useful indication of appropriate safety and quality standards.
