Warning because thieves target car parts in Cork



Gardaí in Cork is warning people to be extra vigilant when it comes to parking their cars at home or in parking lots.

The warning comes as a number of people in the North Cork area had catalytic converters stolen from their vehicles over the weekend.

The targeted cars are older models of the Toyota Yaris.

Speaking to JohnPaul McNamara on C103 Liège today, Sergeant John Kelly of Fermoy Garda station said the theft of catalytic converters from cars was “back in force”.

He said there was an attempted theft in Nad on July 27 where occupants of a blue Skoda were seen acting suspiciously in the area.

The areas targeted in recent weeks were Milford, Churchtown, Effin South and Ballyclogh.

Sgt Kelly said in each case it was an older Toyota Yaris model that was targeted.

He said some of the catalytic converters could cost as much as $ 700 to replace, which in many cases could be more than the price of the stolen car.

He said it is the metal used in these converters that thieves are interested in.

“These are the precious metals in the catalytic converter that they are targeting, the price of which has skyrocketed over the past 12 months,” he said.

Sgt Kelly said thieves are likely to plan ahead and know which cars to target.

“Chances are there is a bit of homework done ahead of time, that they already know the location of the cars, then that a particular night will come and maybe do two or three in the same. general area, ”he said.

He advised owners of this type of vehicle to make sure it is as safe as possible, and also to back up in their driveway.

He also advised people to make their neighbors or friends living in the same neighborhood aware that their car could be a target.
